CPMA Joins BRIMEA: Pioneering a New Era in China-Pakistan Medical Education and Healthcare Collaboration

Press Release June 20, 2025

Beijing, China

The China Pakistan Medical Association (CPMA) has officially joined the Belt & Road International Medical Education Alliance (BRIMEA) as a new member, marking a significant milestone in China-Pakistan medical cooperation. The announcement was made during the opening session of the 2025 BRIMEA Annual Conference, held in Shenyang, China, where CPMA President Dr. Muhammad Shahbaz served as Co-Chair and participated as a Council Member of BRIMEA.

Established on May 26, 2018, and initiated by China Medical University, BRIMEA began as a collaborative platform with the participation of 48 medical education institutions from 15 countries, including Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Pakistan, and Germany. The Alliance was founded to foster medical education partnerships along the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and to serve as a strategic response to global challenges in healthcare training and education.

In his remarks at the opening session, Dr. Muhammad Shahbaz emphasized the importance of transnational collaboration in medical education:

“It is an immense honor for the China Pakistan Medical Association to join BRIMEA and contribute to its mission of advancing global medical education. The Belt and Road framework provides a unique opportunity to integrate academic expertise, cultural understanding, and shared healthcare challenges into one unified effort for progress. Our inclusion in BRIMEA reinforces the strong China-Pakistan partnership and opens new avenues for student exchange, faculty cooperation, and joint research.”

Dr. Shahbaz highlighted CPMA’s vision of building academic and clinical bridges between Chinese and Pakistani institutions through structured exchange programs, dual-degree opportunities, and collaborative research in emerging medical fields. He further pledged CPMA’s active engagement in BRIMEA initiatives to support medical capacity building in developing regions. The inclusion of CPMA in BRIMEA is expected to accelerate educational partnerships between Pakistani medical universities and their counterparts in China and other Belt and Road countries. CPMA, based in Beijing, has long been engaged in promoting bilateral healthcare initiatives, capacity development, and people-to-people exchange between China and Pakistan.

Since its establishment, BRIMEA has become a vital platform for member institutions to share best practices, enhance medical education quality, and promote mutual recognition of medical standards. It serves as a bridge to address global medical education challenges, improve public health outcomes, and foster innovation in healthcare delivery across participating nations.

With the CPMA now part of the alliance, both China and Pakistan are poised to benefit from deepened academic ties, greater knowledge transfer, and enhanced collaboration in the fields of medical education and public health. This development reflects the shared commitment of both countries to the Belt and Road vision—anchored in connectivity, development, and mutual benefit—and demonstrates how medical education cooperation can serve as a powerful tool for global peace, prosperity, and well-being.
